Date Me for a Cause returns to Augustana

With Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching, students are invited to bid on friend dates at the Date Me for a Cause fundraiser auction in support of the Camrose Women’s Shelter on Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Augustana Chapel.

Sam Kohlmann, fourth-year business student and Augustana Students’ Association (ASA) off-campus student representative, said that he’s excited to be planning the event. The event auctions off friend dates sponsored by local Camrose locations such as Tabb Lanes, Lefse House, Fiona’s Coffee, Boston Pizza, East Side Mario’s, G.O.A.T. coffee, the Augustana Climbing Wall, and Twisted Frozen Yogurt.

The student contestants selected by the ASA are volunteers from all corners of Augustana. “It’s a mix of students. We were looking for people who were friendly. As a group we just started talking about people who would be good friend dates – even looked at who has been popular on Chillabit,” said Kohlmann.

Kohlmann said that the friend dates are intended to be a friendly conversation or activity with someone and that there is no romantic aspect or obligation involved.

“It’s so you can hang out with someone that either is always too busy for you or that you think would be cool to meet but haven’t talked to before,” said Kohlmann.

Kohlmann said that there’s a great lineup of contestants. “I’m really excited for each one of them. I think they’re all really great people,” said Kohlmann. “They’ll make for awesome dates and great conversations. By the way, Climbing Wall Cam is on the list.”

The event is intended to raise awareness about the issues of domestic abuse and sexual assault. All proceeds will go to the Camrose Women’s Shelter, a local charity that provides a 24/7 safe space for anyone experiencing domestic violence. Both Nora-Lee, the executive director of the shelter, and Calista Stoyles, co-chair of the Augustana Sexual Assault Awareness committee will be speaking at the event.

“These are critical issues that require a conversation. This event is an opportunity to spread information to students and connect them to resources while still having fun.”

Kohlmann said he doesn’t know what to expect, but that whatever people are willing to bid for a friend date is up to them. “The sky is the limit. This is a great opportunity to socialize and meet someone new.”
