The differences between the Halloween of yesterday and today
Grab a cup of joe and let’s get started. Halloween as a kid was as carefree as Trump’s administration. For adult audiences, Halloween is unforgiving. We’re more worried about passing our midterms, finding jobs, hoping we don’t end up in jail, and hoping cannabis stays legal. We don’t “pass go”, “collect $200” and or receive a “get out of jail free card”. Instead of door to door candy, now it’s door to door lawsuits.
The Halloween spirit can bring out the mischievous side in us and the costumes make it easier to pull pranks because of the anonymity (try saying anonymity three times…ugh). These days it’s harder to stay anonymous pulling Halloween pranks. You’re more likely to end up in trouble. Now, instead of pulling pranks we are too busy trying to get people’s numbers and pass exams.
You’re less likely to find people living in the moment today. Kid pranksters are more likely to record each other egging someone’s house, just for fun. Nowadays, everyone just blogs, Instagrams, or Snapchats it. It’s not just cute family home videos anymore; it’s there for the whole world to see. My generation lived in the moment.
When it’s all said and done, here are my thoughts: it’s better to be dressed like a gangster than to be one, live in the moment, leave the eggs at home, and do your mother proud. Plus, if you’re considering egging a professor’s house, keep in mind that you may end up on the internet. This is for you to decide, it ain’t up to me.
